New Player One Cooled DSO Cameras

Player One, a relatively new manufacturer of astro-cameras, has released its first cooled DSO cameras. It is the Zeus (full-frame) and Poseidon (APS-C) series of cameras. Both come in a monochrome and OSC version. Inside we find the chips we have become familiar with, such as the IMX455 (full-frame) and IMX571 (APS-C). But the housing has some interesting new design features.

First there is the four-point tilting mechanism that can be adjusted from the back of the camera. So the camera can remain connected to the telescope while adjusting tilt which is very convenient. Secondly the USB connections are of the modern USB-C type, which is a lot more easy to plug into in the dark. They are not the same though. The main camera connection is USB-3.0, the auxiliary connection for filterwheel or guiding camera is USB 2.0. Finally the cooling mechanism is a bit more powerful than some comparable cameras. Player One claims cooling up to 40 ºC below ambient.

Also the design is somewhat different than the universal cylinder shape. While the planetary/solar cameras all share a hexagonal design, the cooled cameras all share the same octagonal body. Together with the matt black/red finish and recessed cooling fins the cameras give a powerful impression.

Tilt mechanism is adjustable from the back. All USB connections are of the USB-C type.

At launch the Poseidon-M is priced at $2299, and the Poseidon-C at $1869, both a bit lower than their direct competitors. The full frame Zeus cameras are not yet officially released. Though they are expected to share the same design elements with the Poseidon, albeit with a larger sensor.

More information can be obtained from the Player One Website. This is also where they can be ordered from, with first deliveries starting in December.
